Low-Maintenance Hedging Plants
Who doesn't love "low maintenance"? When it comes to hedges, that usually means that people don't want to spend lots of Sundays cutting their hedges! This section contains those species that are relatively slower growing and keep a tidy shape for a long time, only needing one trim a year as we head into Autumn, and sometimes a Spring tidy up (well before the birds begin nesting). Some species are known to be slow growers (Box, Yew, and Holly are the main ones), but they are not all that slow in the early years. They slow down once they are more mature, and this behaviour is ideal when establishing a hedge that you want to get to a mature height quickly, but then want to be low maintenance for the rest of the hedge's life.
