Hedgerow Tree Saplings
Hedgerow trees increase the biodiversity of hedging and have many advantages. They provide higher up perches and nesting sites for the birds that help to control crop pests; provide shade, wind protection and shelter for cattle, sheep and wildlife (and humans!); can stabilise soil; act as noise barriers and enhance views - and of course, mature trees store huge amounts of carbon so they assist in our goal of net zero.
The generally accepted wisdom is to plant one hedgerow tree every 30m but all trees help with all of these benefits so it is better to plant one every 50m than none at all. When planting, take care that the mature trees will not become obstacles to power line, gateways, road junction visibility etc.
