Evergreen Hedging Plants

Sometimes only an evergreen hedge will do—for privacy, screening, pollution absorption, noise reduction, their ability to provide a dense habitat for all sorts of wildlife, or just for their green appearance all year round.

We offer a wide range of evergreen species as pot grown plants, but in addition we have mature evergreen root balls (root ball season is mid October to early May and you can pre-order from late summer) and a few evergreen species are also available as bare roots which, with a little patience, will give you a top quality evergreen hedge at a fraction of the cost of pot grown or root ball plants.  Top of the tree (excuse the pun!) of evergreen bare roots is Yew (Taxus baccata), but other evergreen species in our range of bare root plants are Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus Rotundifolia), Box (Buxus sempervirens), Shrubby Honeysuckle (Lonicera nitida), Holly (Ilex aquifolium) and Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium), the latter is technically a semi-evergreen because it can lose some leaves in cold winters but generally it does the same job as other evergreen hedging species.

In addition to evergreen bare roots, root balls, and pot-grown plants, we also have superb instant hedging in several species.

We're often asked for an evergreen hedging plant that likes wet soil, and this is a difficult situation—we'd definitely not recommend Yew, which hates to be waterlogged. The best options are Privet and Lonicera nitida or Hornbeam, which is not an evergreen but does keep its leaves all year round. Here's a link to our wet and damp situations page.
