About Trough Grown Instant Hedging

Instant hedging, often called trough grown hedging, is increasingly popular for new housing developments, prestigious landscaping projects and for those who are a tad impatient!  Our troughs are available in a wide range of species including Green Beech, Purple Beech, Privet, Griselinia, Holly, Hornbeam, Cherry Laurel, Portuguese Laurel, Oleaster, Photinia, Privet, Pyracantha, Western Red Cedar and Yew.  In some species we have several options for plant height available.  90L troughs are really the largest trough sizes available anywhere - and will require 2 strong people to manoevre into place but we also have much smaller troughs (generally under £100 each) which are lighter weight and easy to move.

Here's a link to our instant hedging page which lists all the species we have available in this growning method.

Very good quality young plant material is planted into the troughs, and they are then given time, space, British weather (sun and snow and everything inbetween), plenty of water (irrigation if it doesn't rain) and fertiliser.  They are trimmed regularly as they grow so that they become bushy plants, closing up the gaps between them.  When they are ready to be sold, they are a dense screen ready to do an instant job in your garden.

Planting instant hedging is very straightforward because the planting density is already settled.  You simple dig a trench the same depth as the trough and a bit wider which will allow the roots to spread sideways, pop the row of plants into your trench, and backfill.  We recommend Rootgrow because these are big plants with a substantial nutrient requirement and Rootgrow turbo charges plant roots to find the nutrients and moisture in soil.

All instant hedging troughs are delivered on pallets.  There is no minimum quantity.  All orders that include troughs are charged for a pallet delivery on the first pallet but subsequent pallets are included in the cost of the plants.

Having said how gorgeous our instant hedging is, we are clearly aware that they're an expensive option and if it's just a stretch too far, you should consider root balls which, if planted fairly densely (we can advise you on this) will give you a "virtually instant" appearance at lower cost.  We call it "virtually instant" rather than "instant" because they will be individual plants that haven't been trimmed into a hedge shape.  We also have 10L pot grown plants and large bare roots which can, at the right density, give a "virtually instant" hedge.
