About Cell Grown Plants

Over many decades, cell grown plants have come to partially replace traditional bare root planting in forestry because they can be planted in more months of the year, and in the last few years, they've become increasingly mainstream for domestic hedging projects where there is a degree of patience to allow small plants to mature.

We love cell grown plants because they are small but perfectly formed!  They are grown from seed by a specialised nursery partner and not all species are available as a cell grown plant but where they are available, they are really nice quality small plants and we highly recommend them.

Cell growing has numerous benefits

- the extended season (compared with bare root planting) means that it can be more convenient to use cell grown plants and you are planting into warmer soil and that can aid establishment

- the root does not suffer damage when removed from the cell (like a deep maxi plug) and the root hairs are protected by compost and this helps to stop the roots drying out

- the success rate is high (higher than bare roots) so although a bit more expensive initially, that does save the cost and inconvenience of buying replacement plants where there have been failures.
