Hedging Plants Native to the UK Page 2 of 2
Native plants are those that arrived naturally in Britain and Ireland since the end of the last Ice Age (i.e., without the assistance of humans) or plants that were already present during the last Ice Age. We have a very wide range of native hedging species. These are just a few benefits of native hedging and trees.
They are completely acclimatised to British weather conditions and will thrive when you replant them.
Native plants co-evolved with wildlife. This benefits insects by flowering at the time of year when the nectar and pollen are needed, and the more insects there are, the more of all other types of wildlife there are. Some butterfly species are totally dependent on just two native species of hedging plant/tree – without them, there would be no more brimstone blue butterflies. Along the same lines, native plants produce berries that support birds and small mammals, and some not-so-small ones (like foxes), and their digestive systems are accustomed to the native berries. Equally, livestock can benefit from being able to eat most native hedgerow plants.
Native hedging and trees can be lower maintenance and use less water than non-native species because they are part of the world order, they’re meant to grow here, and they don’t need any special attention to thrive (subject always to the “right plant, right place” guidance, i.e., don’t plant a moisture-loving plant in a dry situation).
The vast majority of our native hedging range is sold during the winter bare root season (November to April), but you can preorder from late summer. We also have some of the most popular native species in pots and a wide range of cell-grown plants, available all year.
In addition to our range of native hedging plants shown below, we also have native tree saplings for woodland creation.
Our website automatically discounts larger orders, but if your order is over £1000, please contact us for a bespoke quote.
