Formal Hedging Plants Page 2 of 2
A formal hedge is one that is a row (or a double row) of the same plant species, planted sufficiently close together and regularly trimmed so that they grow together into one long structure. Normally they are cut to a neat shape on the sides and a flat top and it is preferable to choose plant species that take well to clipping and don’t need to be clipped too often so that they stay neat for many weeks.
We supply a very wide range of species (shown below) suitable for formal hedging and we have most of these species in a choice of root types.
Just because you want a formal hedge, doesn’t mean you can’t use economical bare root plants. In fact, many of the species used most in formal hedging are available (at much lower cost than pots, root balls or troughs) as beautiful bare root plants – Box, Yew, Privet, Lonicera nitida, Beech, Purple Beech, Hornbeam and Cherry Laurel are some of the most popular formal hedging species and are all available here. All of these species can be trimmed to a neat shape and will hold that shape for a long time – some only need trimmed once a year.
Whilst most of these species take a little time to grow into a mature formal hedge (because bare root plants tend to be relatively small plants) Beech and Hornbeam are exceptions and you can use bare roots to achieve a virtually instant hedge by buying the tall plants and planting them relatively close together (3 – 4 per metre) and in spring, when they come into leaf you’ll be amazed at how mature the hedge looks - almost instant hedging!
In addition to our range of bare root plants suitable for formal hedging, many of these species are also available as mature, chunky root balls, and of course, we have pot-grown plants too.
At the opposite end of the scale from bare roots, we have instant hedging grown in troughs or bags where the nursery has done all the hard work for you and delivers to you a trimmed, mature hedge just ready to be popped into a trench.
So, whatever your budget, whatever your objectives, we have a full range of options for formal hedging in all the root types, and all the most popular species.
