Bare Root Hedging and Tree Saplings Page 2 of 3
Bare root hedging (often simply called bare roots) is one of our most popular root types, and we sell hundreds of thousands of these plants each year. All farm hedgerows were initially planted as bare root plants, and we offer an extensive range of deciduous, native hedging species (eg Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Cherry, Crab Apple, Hazel and many others). Several evergreen species also do very well as bare root plants, including Yew, Cherry Laurel, Privet and Box. In addition to our extensive bare root hedging range, we supply a good selection of bare root tree saplings (Nordmann Fir, Spruce, Scots Pine, Sweet Chestnut), and of course, many hedging species can be allowed to grow on as trees.
Bare roots are despatched while dormant (November to April, and sometimes into May). You can pre-order from August onwards to join the despatch queue and ensure we have sufficient stock available, as some species run out very quickly in certain years. Being early in the queue is helpful because planting in November or December allows the plants to settle in, benefit from winter rainfall, and become well established before the spring growth spurt, thereby increasing the success rate.
We have a lot of information on our website about this root type. For those who have not planted bare roots before, please read About Bare Root Hedging for an overview.
