Sycamore tree saplings (Acer pseudoplatanus)

Sycamore trees are
- non-native but are thought to have been introduced by the Romans so they are completely naturalised
- deciduous
- wildlife friendly in that they support a wide range of aphids which attract birds
- fast growing with pale wood, and makes a lovely wood for furniture making, veneers, firewood and because the wood doesn't taint, is also used for kitchen utensils
- great as a woodland tree, in large gardens or parks, or as a forestry tree (trunk grows to 60cm in 60 years)
- quite large leaves turn yellow in Autumn, there are yellow flowers in Spring, and in Autumn the tree produces winged fruits (containing seeds) called samarus
- non-toxic to livestock
- these tree saplings are all grown in the UK

Silver Birch tree sapling summary

A fast-growing, native, pioneer tree species (see Downy Birch for Scotland and Wales)
Striking ivory-white bark, slightly pendulous branches and delicate diamond-shaped leaves in abundance, giving a pleasing sway in light breezes
Vibrant yellow autumnal foliage in abundance that drops and decays quickly to improve the surrounding soil
Will thrive in any open sunny situation and in most soil conditions – poor, wet or polluted are all acceptable
Wildlife friendly
Gorgeous when planted in a group as a copse in large gardens and woodlands, and works well as a nurse tree for slower-growing species such as Oak, Hornbeam or Scots Pine
Reaches a mature height of up to 25m
Available as bare root plants in the dormant season (November to April) and as cell-grown or 2-litre potted plants all year round

English Yew (Taxus baccata) hedging plant summary

Evergreen
Native (one of the very few native evergreen species)
Quite slow growing (though not as slow as many people believe), retaining a neat shape throughout the winter
A very attractive dark green, useful as a background in a border
Can be trimmed into intricate shapes, including topiary shapes, or cloud pruned
Good for hedges varying in height from 1m up to very tall
Yew is popular as a hedging plant but can also be grown as individual trees, which are good in woodlands (where there is no risk of cattle/sheep grazing, because it is toxic) to provide some evergreen cover
Yew is one of our most popular species and we have many options shown here, and more options on our nursery
Bare root and root ball Yew is available in several sizes in the dormant season (November to April), and we have pot grown options and 1m long troughs of instant hedging available all year round
