Pyracantha 'Golden Sun' hedge plants summary

A fantastic, dense, spiny, evergreen hedging plant, ideal as an intruder-proof hedge
Profuse creamy, scented flowers in May, followed by clusters of bright golden yellow berries offering spectacular autumn and winter colour
The flowers are loved by pollinators, and the berries provide vital food for garden birds during winter
Once established, it grows quickly and is remarkably low-maintenance. It responds very well to regular pruning and can be clipped into a fairly narrow hedge or kept as a dense, wider hedge, with heights typically between 1m and 3m
A great plant for covering walls and fences, or as a standalone hedge or shrub
Good in full sun or partial shade, but flowering will be best in full sun
We have pot-grown Pyracantha available year-round. We also have a red-berried variety, Pyracantha 'Red Column', and an orange-berried variety, Pyracantha 'Orange Glow', available

Pyracantha hedging plants summary

Profuse creamy, scented flowers in May, followed by large clusters of bright orange berries
A fantastic very prickly evergreen hedging plant, ideal as an intruder proof hedge
Extremely good for wildlife - the birds absolutely love the berries though if you have orange and red plants near each other they'll eat the red berries first - we don't know why!
Good in full sun or partial shade
Good for hedges 1m to 3m in height
Can be kept quite narrow
Excellent to grow as a wall climber
We have pot grown Pyracantha with orange berries and all plant options shown are available all year round

One of the best species for wet soil, and will even cope with standing water
Early to come into leaf and keeps its leaves very late in the autumn, so it has leaf cover for most of the year

Fixes nitrogen in the soil, making it ideal for poor soils/land recovery
Native
Wildlife-friendly catkins and cones containing seeds

Flowering and Berrying Mixed Native Hedging Packs

Each pack of 50 plants is enough for 8-10 metres of hedging
Packs contain 6 UK-native species, all of which flower and produce autumnal fruits
The species are 50% Hawthorn plus 10% each of 5 additional species selected by us from the following: Blackthorn, Dog Rose, Crab Apple, Elder, Purging Buckthorn, Guelder Rose, Spindle, Dogwood.
Alternatively, we offer 50% Blackthorn-based packs, which are better suited to damp areas. They contain all the same species, but Blackthorn is 50% instead of Hawthorn.
If you are a farmer claiming a grant, you must order the 45/60cm 2-year-old plants. These packs are livestock safe, but use our Horse Paddock packs if you are planting near horses, because some hedging species are dangerous for horses

All the plants in these packs are bare-root and only available in the dormant winter season (November to April). We also offer 20 or 50 plant pot-grown mixed native packs (Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Dog Rose and Field Maple), which are available all year round. All the plants are grown in Herefordshire.
Please phone (or email hello@hedgenursery.co.uk) if you would like advice or have questions, or if your order is likely to come to over £1000 - we may be able to offer a better price. Our experienced horticulturists answer calls and emails, and we’re always very happy to help.

Carefully selected species to ensure that all are suitable as a thick hedgerow but also free of danger for horses
4 native species - Hawthorn (60%), Dog Rose (20%), Hazel (10%) and Field Maple (10%) - you can add more species if you wish - see Product Description
All the species in this pack will produce a mixture of flowers, berries, nuts, rose hips and catkins
Farm grants require 45/60cm plants that are 1+1 transplants, and our 2-year-old plants shown below are eligible for grant claims
All plants are grown from seed in fertile Herefordshire soil
All plants are bare-root and only available for delivery during the dormant winter season (November to April). At any time, you can pre-order for delivery in November. We offer 20 or 50 plant pot grown mixed native packs (Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Dog Rose and Field Maple) all year round, however, if you are planting where horses will graze or jump you should not use Blackthorn, so if you choose the pot grown option, please call and ask us to swap out the Blackthorn for more of the other species.

Please contact us by phone (or you can email us at hello@hedgenursery.co.uk) if you have any questions, would like any advice, or if your order is likely to come to over £1000 - we may be able to offer a better price than the online price. We have experienced horticulturists answering calls and emails, and we’re always very happy to help.

Countryside Stewardship BN11 and BN7 Mixed Native Farm Hedgerow Plant Pack - pack of 50 plants (4 species)

Our mixed native hedging packs in bare root form are the lowest-cost but are only available from November to April, the dormant season. Alternatively, we have the same mixture of plants in 2-litre pots available all year round. The pot-grown plants are more mature and bushier, so you can plant them at a slightly lower density.
These farm hedgerow mixed native hedging packs contain four species of native bare-root plants. We also have economy mixed native packs, which contain just two species but still comply with farm grant rules. These packs are designed to create great, wildlife-friendly hedges suitable for farms, paddocks, and gardens where a more natural appearance to a formal hedge is required.

Each farm hedgerow pack contains 50 plants, enough for 8-10 metres of hedging.
Each pack contains 25 x Hawthorn, 15 x Blackthorn, 5 x Field Maple and 5 x Dog Rose or, alternatively, 25 x Blackthorn, 15 x Hawthorn, 5 x Field Maple and 5 x Dog Rose.
Farm grant claims require 2-year-old 45/60cm bare root plants.
All the bare root plants are grown in Herefordshire.
All plants are safe for livestock, but if you are planting near horses, use our Horse Paddock packs (which do not contain Blackthorn).

Some competitors offer "farm hedging" that is not grant-compliant. The DEFRA rules are strict, and with the more generous grants available, we are expecting more inspections. So, if you are claiming a grant, please ensure you are buying 1+1 plants (2-year-old plants grown at low density in the second year).
Please get in touch with us by phone (or email us at hello@hedgenursery.co.uk) if you have any questions, would like advice, or if your order is likely to exceed £1000 - we may be able to offer a better price than the online price. We have experienced horticulturists answering calls and emails, and we're always very happy to help.

English Yew (Taxus baccata) hedging plant summary

Evergreen
Native (one of the very few native evergreen species)
Quite slow growing (though not as slow as many people believe), retaining a neat shape throughout the winter
A very attractive dark green, useful as a background in a border
Can be trimmed into intricate shapes, including topiary shapes, or cloud pruned
Good for hedges varying in height from 1m up to very tall
Yew is popular as a hedging plant but can also be grown as individual trees, which are good in woodlands (where there is no risk of cattle/sheep grazing, because it is toxic) to provide some evergreen cover
Yew is one of our most popular species and we have many options shown here, and more options on our nursery
Bare root and root ball Yew is available in several sizes in the dormant season (November to April), and we have pot grown options and 1m long troughs of instant hedging available all year round

Please contact us by phone (or you can email us at hello@hedgenursery.co.uk) if you have any questions, would like any advice, or if your order is likely to come to over £1000 - we may be able to offer a better price than the online price. We have experienced horticulturists answering calls and emails and we’re always very happy to help.
