Sycamore trees are
- non-native but are thought to have been introduced by the Romans so they are completely naturalised
- deciduous
- wildlife friendly in that they support a wide range of aphids which attract birds
- fast growing with pale wood, and makes a lovely wood for furniture making, veneers, firewood and because the wood doesn't taint, is also used for kitchen utensils
- great as a woodland tree, in large gardens or parks, or as a forestry tree (trunk grows to 60cm in 60 years)
- quite large leaves turn yellow in Autumn, there are yellow flowers in Spring, and in Autumn the tree produces winged fruits (containing seeds) called samarus
- non-toxic to livestock
- these tree saplings are all grown in the UK

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) hedging plant summary

The UK's most popular hedging plant, forming the main component of farm hedgerows all over the country and also popular as a hedgerow tree or in woodland creation schemes. If you're looking for a mixed native hedge rather than just Hawthorn, please go to our Mixed Native Hedging Pack section
Profuse flowering and berrying - extremely wildlife friendly
Native
Safe to use near livestock
Extremely long-living, with some Hawthorn hedging identified as being centuries old
Ideal as an informal hedge, but can also be trimmed to a neat shape for a formal hedge
Good for hedges of 1m up to 10m
Quite fast-growing
If you are claiming a farm grant, you need to use the bare root 45/60cm 2-year-old plants planted at 6 per metre (grant rules)
All the plants on this page are grown in Britain
Available as a bare root plant (November to April), and as cell-grown and pot-grown plants, which are available all year round

Please contact us by phone (or email us at hello@hedgenursery.co.uk) if you have any questions, would like any advice, or if your order is likely to exceed £1000 - we may be able to offer a better price than the online price. We have experienced horticulturists answering calls and emails, and we’re always very happy to help.
