spectacular when planted en masse and bearing its Winter bright orange berries on distinctive grey foliage
excellent at the coast where it can withstand coastal gales and salt laden winds and grows best on thin sandy soil in bright sunshine, but it is also good on almost any normal soil (not wet) and situation (not shady) and is also very useful for exposed inland sites. 
the roots fix nitrogen in the soil so it can be used as a pioneer species to improve the soil before other plants go in
long, thin grey leaves, somewhat spiny
vitamin-rich berries are used as food, traditional medicine and skin treatment 
grows to about 6m and forms a dense thicket
native to Eastern Europe (especially Russia, Ukraine and Mongolia) and is commonly found across Europe and Scandinavia
