Countryside Stewardship BN11 and BN7 Mixed Native Farm Hedgerow Plant Pack - pack of 50 plants (4 species)

Our mixed native hedging packs in bare root form are the lowest-cost but are only available from November to April, the dormant season. Alternatively, we have the same mixture of plants in 2-litre pots available all year round. The pot-grown plants are more mature and bushier, so you can plant them at a slightly lower density.
These farm hedgerow mixed native hedging packs contain four species of native bare-root plants. We also have economy mixed native packs, which contain just two species but still comply with farm grant rules. These packs are designed to create great, wildlife-friendly hedges suitable for farms, paddocks, and gardens where a more natural appearance to a formal hedge is required.

Each farm hedgerow pack contains 50 plants, enough for 8-10 metres of hedging.
Each pack contains 25 x Hawthorn, 15 x Blackthorn, 5 x Field Maple and 5 x Dog Rose or, alternatively, 25 x Blackthorn, 15 x Hawthorn, 5 x Field Maple and 5 x Dog Rose.
Farm grant claims require 2-year-old 45/60cm bare root plants.
All the bare root plants are grown in Herefordshire.
All plants are safe for livestock, but if you are planting near horses, use our Horse Paddock packs (which do not contain Blackthorn).

Some competitors offer "farm hedging" that is not grant-compliant. The DEFRA rules are strict, and with the more generous grants available, we are expecting more inspections. So, if you are claiming a grant, please ensure you are buying 1+1 plants (2-year-old plants grown at low density in the second year).
Please get in touch with us by phone (or email us at hello@hedgenursery.co.uk) if you have any questions, would like advice, or if your order is likely to exceed £1000 - we may be able to offer a better price than the online price. We have experienced horticulturists answering calls and emails, and we're always very happy to help.

Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium) hedging plant summary

Dark green medium sized leaves which are soft and easy to trim
Retains most of its leaves in winter - a semi evergreen rather than a full evergreen but does give good winter cover
Non-native but we do also have Wild Privet which is native
Toxic if eaten
White, pungent flowers in spring and small berries in autumn
Fast growing and suitable for all situations other than very wet soils
Pollution tolerant so a very good species for urban areas
As one of our most popular species we have a wide range of options - we have bare root Privet in several size options in the dormant season (November to April), several different pot grown Privet options, mature Privet root balls in a couple of the most frequently asked for sizes (again in the dormant season) and 1m instant hedging troughs - but please do contact us if you require a different size to the options shown below - we often do have other stock at our nursery that is not listed on the website

Please contact us by phone (or you can email us at hello@hedgenursery.co.uk) if you have any questions, would like any advice, or if your order is likely to come to over £1000 - we may be able to offer a better price than the online price. We have experienced horticulturists answering calls and emails and we’re always very happy to help.

English Yew (Taxus baccata) hedging plant summary

Evergreen
Native (one of the very few native evergreen species)
Quite slow growing (though not as slow as many people believe), retaining a neat shape throughout the winter
A very attractive dark green, useful as a background in a border
Can be trimmed into intricate shapes, including topiary shapes, or cloud pruned
Good for hedges varying in height from 1m up to very tall
Yew is popular as a hedging plant but can also be grown as individual trees, which are good in woodlands (where there is no risk of cattle/sheep grazing, because it is toxic) to provide some evergreen cover
Yew is one of our most popular species and we have many options shown here, and more options on our nursery
Bare root and root ball Yew is available in several sizes in the dormant season (November to April), and we have pot grown options and 1m long troughs of instant hedging available all year round
