English Holly (Ilex aquifolium) hedge plant summary

Native (one of very few evergreen native species)
Prickly leaves
Evergreen
One of the best hedging species for shade
Also good in damp soils and at the coast
An easy way to add some evergreen cover into a mixed native hedge
Livestock safe (can be used as livestock feed) but not recommended near horse paddocks
Holly makes a fantastic single species hedge (or a component of a mixed hedge) but these plants can also be grown as individual trees either in a woodland setting or a garden
We have pot grown Holly plants in various sizes all year round

Please contact us by phone (or you can email us at hello@hedgenursery.co.uk) if you have any questions, would like any advice, or if your order is likely to come to over £1000 - we may be able to offer a better price than the online price. We have experienced horticulturists answering calls and emails and we’re always very happy to help.

Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) hedging plant summary

A beautiful species for a formal hedge
Leaves turn brown in autumn and many are retained on the plant giving good winter cover but not quite as good as an evergreen hedge
Native
Not prickly
Good in damper soils
Tough, low maintenance species
Good for hedges that are 1m to 3m tall but can also be grown as individual trees
All the smaller bare root plants on this page are grown in Herefordshire and some of the taller ones are grown in Holland where they specialise in growing tall Hornbeam as a bare root plant - super quality! The pots, cell grown and instant hedging troughs are all grown in Britain
This species is also suitable to use as a hedgerow tree (planting density 1 every 5-10m) or in woodland creation (planting density 1 every 2-3sqm)
As one of our most popular species, we have a wide range of sizes of bare root Hornbeam, pot grown options and 1m long troughs of instant hedging

English Yew (Taxus baccata) hedging plant summary

Evergreen
Native (one of the very few native evergreen species)
Quite slow growing (though not as slow as many people believe), retaining a neat shape throughout the winter
A very attractive dark green, useful as a background in a border
Can be trimmed into intricate shapes, including topiary shapes, or cloud pruned
Good for hedges varying in height from 1m up to very tall
Yew is popular as a hedging plant but can also be grown as individual trees, which are good in woodlands (where there is no risk of cattle/sheep grazing, because it is toxic) to provide some evergreen cover
Yew is one of our most popular species and we have many options shown here, and more options on our nursery
Bare root and root ball Yew is available in several sizes in the dormant season (November to April), and we have pot grown options and 1m long troughs of instant hedging available all year round
