The Corylus avellana (Hazel) is a fast growing species of Hazel native to Europe. It is common in many European woodlands and is also an important component of the hedgerows that were the traditional field boundaries in lowland England. Hazel is a large deciduous shrub which can also grow into a wonderful medium-sized tree exhibiting large mid green leaves. Come spring the tree is covered in a mass of long yellow catkins followed by edible hazelnuts in autumn.
