Native to the UK, the Yew Tree (also referred to as the Death Tree, or Tree of Death) is another of our Great British trees that has a long history of myth and legend. Yew Trees were sacred to the Druids and came to symbolise death, immortality, transformation and rebirth within Celtic culture.
Yew are ancient trees that are often found within the grounds of churchyards. Even today, amongst some cultures in modern England, Yew shoots are buried with the deseased as a sign of immortality and to offer protection.
Living long before the Ice Age, Yew fossils have been discovered from the Jurassic era and some living English Yews are as old as 4000 years.
