Preferred common name: Wild Service Tree Other common names: Checker tree, chequer tree, checkers, chequers, griping tree
Our Royal Horticultural Society Wild Service Tree (Sorbus torminalis) is a rare native deciduous hedge with narrow, spiky leaves which turn from green to yellow, then orange and finally purple-red in autumn. The undersides have small hairs when young, but both sides are smooth and shiny when older. Rounded heads of small creamy-white flowers are produced between May to June, and are hermaphrodite and insect pollinated. Followed by clusters of speckled brown fruit with small pale lenticels spots, which ripen in September.
