White Willow (Salix alba) Pack of 12 Cell Grown 20-40cm

Product Code:  SALA12

From Only: £18.39 Ex VAT
Or £1.53 Per plant

Our RHS White Willow (Salix alba) cell grown plants are extracted from their cells prior to despatch and are wrapped in protective packaging to ensure the root plug stays moist. The plants come with their root systems intact, whereas bare root plants can lose the fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that cell grown plants can become more quickly established than bare root. Another advantage of cell grown White Willow is that it can be planted into warm soils when roots are active, outside the dormant period. As long as the roots are kept moist, cell grown plants can be planted throughout the year.

Benefits
• RHS cell grown White Willow hedging plants, under licence granted by the Royal Horticultural Society
• Extended planting season - they can be planted when you want to plant them-- as long as the roots are kept moist. You are not restricted to the bare root season
• Minimal root disturbance - root systems are supplied intact - with no loss of fine feeding roots and root hairs-- so once planted they can grow rapidly-- not suffering the shock that bare root plants will.
• Uniformity - these plants are more uniform.

NB: Our cell grown plants are sold in quantities of 12. Unfortunately we are unable deliver split bundles. We can offer a substantial volume discount. These plants are between 20-40cm high though the actual height may vary due to the growing season.

Complete Product Information for White Willow (Salix alba) Pack of 12 Cell Grown 20-40cm
Our RHS White Willow (Salix alba) cell grown plants are extracted from their cells prior to despatch and are wrapped in protective packaging to ensure the root plug stays moist.

White Willow hedges are fast-growing deciduous native hedges with narrow silver-backed leaves. The name derives from the white tone to the undersides of the leaves. The hedge can shimmer in the wind providing movement and colour to a garden. It is fast growing (up to 2 ft per year). The bark is grey-brown and deeply fissured in older hedges. The leaves are superb; paler than most other willows, due to a covering of very fine silky white hairs, particularly on the underside. The flowers are produced in catkins in early spring, and pollinated by insects.

This hedge is suitable for use in sea areas, and is often found by water. The Roots can bind soil and help prevent erosion. It is hardy and thrives in most soils and positions, but prefers sun.

It will grow to an approx height of 15m-25m. The wood has been used for rough baskets and hurdles and burns rapidly. The leaves are browsed by animals, particularly horses and need protection when small. This hedge is especially useful for rapidly growing windbreaks and screens.

Cell Grown hedges come with the benefit of container grown plants but the price is nearer the bare root price. The plants come with their root systems intact, whereas bare root plants can lose the tiny fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that they will become more established quicker than bare root. They can also be planted into warm soils when roots are active, outside the dormant period. Whereas the bare root season ends between April to September, September, October, March April and May are ideal months for planting cell grown plants. Infact, unlike bare root, you can plant cell grown plants throughout the year as long as the roots are kept moist. That is why 60% of the worlds forestry trees are now cell grown!
