Our Royal Horticultural Society White Willow (Salix alba) hedges are fast-growing deciduous native hedges with narrow silver-backed leaves. The name derives from the white tone to the undersides of the leaves. The hedge can shimmer in the wind providing movement and colour to a garden. It is fast growing (up to 2 ft per year). The bark is grey-brown and deeply fissured in older hedges. The leaves are superb; paler than most other willows, due to a covering of very fine silky white hairs, particularly on the underside. The flowers are produced in catkins in early spring, and pollinated by insects.

RHS White Willow (Salix alba)hedges are fast-growing deciduous native hedges with narrow silver-backed leaves. The name derives from the white tone to the undersides of the leaves. This hedge is suitable for use in sea areas, and is often found by water. The Roots can bind soil and help prevent erosion. It is hardy and thrives in most soils and positions, but prefers sun.

It will grow to an approx height of 15m-25m. The wood has been used for rough baskets and hurdles and burns rapidly. The leaves are browsed by animals, particularly horses and need protection when small. This hedge is especially useful for rapidly growing windbreaks and screens

RHS bare root hedging is a very low cost way of planting a hedge, but is only available to buy and plant when dormant (November-March). Orders ahead of 1st November will be stored to guarantee an early delivery date.
