Our Royal Horticultural Society White Willow (Salix alba) hedges are fast-growing deciduous native hedges with narrow silver-backed leaves. The name derives from the white tone to the undersides of the leaves. The hedge can shimmer in the wind providing movement and colour to a garden. It is fast growing (up to 2 ft per year). The bark is grey-brown and deeply fissured in older hedges. The leaves are superb; paler than most other willows, due to a covering of very fine silky white hairs, particularly on the underside. The flowers are produced in catkins in early spring, and pollinated by insects.
