Common name: Western Red Cedar
Our Royal Horticultural Society Western Red Cedar Conifer (Thuja plicata) is an evergreen conifer, bright green dense foliage with pale green undersurface. Holds colour well in winter.
RHS Western Red Cedar is a great alternative to Leylandii as it is slower growing but still provides a dense, evergreen hedge. The glossy leaves are mid to dark green with a slightly green underside, aromatic when crushed, and hang gracefully in sprays. It can produce small cones. Its average growth rate is 45/60cm and it would be clipped to shape in late summer/early autumn. Western Red Cedar grows in sun or shade and in any well drained soil.
