Thuja plicata Atrovirens (Western Red Cedar) is an evergreen conifer with red-brown flaking bark. It has a conical habit and dark-green, neat foliage that may become bronze-tinted in winter. It is slower growing than leylandii and makes a very good hedge. Foliage smells of pineapple when crushed. Plant in moist, free-draining soil in any aspect. Needs protection from drying winds, particularly when young. This conifer makes an extremely good hedge. It will reach a height of 20m and a spread of 15m after 10-20 years. Contact with skin may cause irritation.
