A fast-growing, very large broadly conical coniferous tree. A very common forestry tree, the Sitka spruce will thrive on many soils, in particular damp ones.The Sitka Spruce is most easily identified by the 'three p’s': it's pointed crown, the leaves (needles) are on pegs and it's pendant cones.

The Sitka Spruce came to Britain via sailors in the 1800's utilising it for it's medicinal properties. For example spruce beer was discovered to be an antidote to scurvy.

The Sitka Spruce is very important to the forestry industry, as it is very fast growing, large and reliable.

The plants come with their root systems intact, whereas bare root plants can lose the tiny fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that they will become more established quicker than bare root.

Cell grown plants can also be planted into warm soils when roots are active, outside the dormant period. Whereas the bare root season ends between April to September, September, October, March April and May are ideal months for planting cell grown plants. In fact, unlike bare root, you can plant cell grown plants throughout the year as long as the roots are kept moist. That is why 60% of the world`s forestry trees are now cell grown!
