It produces clusters of creamy white flower in June and July; followed by large bunches of shiny black elder-berries, high in Vitamin C. Both the flowers and berries are used in cordial and wine making. It comes into leaf early January and the leaves fall late in sheltered areas during November and have 5/7 leaflets with slightly serrated edges.
The Elder likes sunny areas to produce maximum fruit, but will tolerate some shade. It is suitable for all soil, but in particular prefers most and fertile soil. It is advisable to prune in March, to create a low framework of branches to carry on new growth.
RHS bare root hedging is a very low cost way of planting a hedge, but is only available to buy and plant when dormant (November-March). Orders ahead of 1st November will be stored to guarantee an early delivery date.
The RHS Golden Elder has no serious insect or disease problems. Potential insects include black-fly and Glasshouse red spider mite. A potential disease could be verticillium wilt. Toxicity; any part of the plant may cause discomfort if ingested. However, the berries may be consumed if cooked.
