Our Prunus lusitanica Portugal Laurel is a beautiful shrub in its own right however if left to grow naturally it will form into a large shapely tree. Its foliage is made up of ovate to elliptic glossy green leaves that when young hold a reddish tinge and grow from red stalks. In early summer the tree displays small cup shaped fragrant white flowers which are then followed by dark purple to red fruits that ripen to black. This hardy and versatile plant is ideal for excellent hedging and will suit most soils, good on chalk. Seed kernels can be harmful if eaten.
