Like its close relative the cherry laurel, the Portugal laurel from Spain and Portugal is usually planted to make a large hedge, screen or windbreak. It is an evergreen shrub growing to 3-15 m tall. It is a lovely shrub to grow individually, as a hedge or screen. Allowed to grow naturally it can become a large shapely tree. The leaves are an attractive shade of green, reddish when young and on red stalks. It bears white flowers in early summer with a sweet hawthorn scent. It is hardier and more versatile than the cherry laurel, tolerates topiary and likes Full sun to partial shade and soil which is well-drained/light,. The Royal Horticultural Society have given it their Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
