There are many locations around the UK that have exceptionally heavy, clay soil. Some plants and trees find it very hard to survive and flourish in these locations, so we have put together a pack of what we think are the best choices of trees to plant in clay soil. This pack contains two of each of the following: Carpinus Betulus (Hornbeam), Fraxinus Excelsior (Common Ash), Platanus hispanica (London Plane) and Quercus Robur (English Oak). A detailed description of each tree can be found below.

Complete Product Information for Pack of 8 Trees Suitable for Clay Soil (8-10cm Girth Bare Root)
Carpinus Betulus: an attractive elm-like deciduous tree, which is native to Europe and Asia. The leaves are alternate and ovate rounded and dark green. In the autumn it will bear striking, yellow-orange long-lasting foliage, the fruit that appear are nut like. The growth habit is narrow and pyramidal, reaching heights of between 8-15 meters, it is a fully hardy tree it can tolerate temperatures down to -15C, and will tolerate urban conditions.

Fraxinus Excelsior: A fast growing, native tree; Ash has dark green leaves and large pendent fruit clusters in autumn. The leaves that appear in spring are delicate leaflets usually with nine to eleven oval leaflets, arrange in pairs with an odd one at the end. From the black woolly buds, male or female flowers develop. This sometimes occurs on the same plant, however some plants which are male one year are female the next year. The female plants develop into fruits often called “ash keys” that are stiff sprays of bunches of keys. It is particularly good in coastal positions, but also damp shade or full sun. Due to its fast growth it can be used to form an effective windbreak to protect other plants and therefore is wind tolerant. Ash thrives in all soil conditions, in particular deep lime-rich and moist soils. It needs a rich, fertile soil, acid or neutral or just mildly alkaline. It is advisable not to plant Ash in a hedge as it will give rise to gaps forming in the hedge, due to the large size of its foliage. The Fraxinus Excelsior is a species of Fraxinus native to most of Europe, Fraxinus is the classical Latin name for an ash tree and excelsior means taller, indicating that this species is one of the tallest ashes. It is a very hardy and fast growing native deciduous plant with wide spreading surface roots, which appears its best in winter.

Platanus hispanica: A well known tree in the UK, first recorded in the 1660s it was noted for its resistance to pollution and is often credited with the clearance of smog in London. It has large, broad lobed leaves of green and the trunk flakes to reveal a patchwork of green, white and cream. A mature tree can reach heights upwards of 20 meters. It is suited to all soil types (including clay) as long as they are moist and well drained.

Quercus Robur: A common sight around the UK, oak is a tree synonymous with Royalty, It is distinguished from others in the species by its leaves having only a very short stalk 3 to 8 mm long, and by its pendunculate acorns. The acorns form a valuable food resource for several small mammals and birds. The leaves are 7 to 14 cm long and 4 to 8 cm broad, evenly lobed with five to six lobes on each side, and a 1 cm petiole. The flowers are catkins, produced in the spring.
