The Prunus cerasifera Nigra is a superb small to medium sized deciduous tree with a broadly rounded habit. The trees leaves display a bronze red colour when young however with age this gradually darkens to a deep purple. It is also known for producing one of the earliest blossoms of the season as masses of single bowl shaped pink flowers adorn its bare branches from as early as February occasionally followed by plum like red or yellow edible from July onwards.
