The Alnus Cordata (Italian Alder) tree will grow vertically, it has a dense foliage with short side branches. The leaves are heart shaped and about 10cm long, they have a rich glossy green above and a lighter green beneath. In late winter or early spring it will produce yellowish male catkins about 9cm long at the branch tips; they are followed by 2.5cm long seed cones. It will adapt well to most situations and soils but does best near water.
