Acer campestre (Field Maple) is a fast growing native deciduous tree. It produces beautiful young foliage which is tinged red, turning to green, then yellow in autumn, with 5 lobbed leaves; green/red in spring and summer and then a buttery yellow colour in autumn. Small green-yellow flowers develop in spring flowed by winged seeds in autumn. It is suitable for any soil, in particular well drained or moist. It will grow in any position, in particular exposed/windy areas, dry shade or coastal areas. It can be timed to shaped at the beginning of winter, if left untrimmed it is a large and can reach a mature height of 10-15 meters. A classic tree, a constant sight all over England, it was widely used in the middle ages to create musical instruments.
