The RHS Lombardy Poplar (Populus nigra `Italica`) is a fast growing, narrow, upright deciduous hedge, with a fastigiate habit giving it a columnar shape. With glossy dark green leaves; bronze when young and turning yellow in autumn. Followed by red catkins in spring.
The RHS Lombardy Poplar (Populus nigra `Italica`) prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in heavy clay soil. It prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. Avoid growing poplars within 130ft (40m) of buildings.
