This RHS Premium Cell Grown Japanese or Green-Leaf Barberry (Berberis thunbergii) produces ornamental foliage and berries, which will persist throughout the winter and are attractive to the birds.

It is a good choice for the inner city gardener since it is tolerant of pollution.

They will withstand a heavy pruning to ground level in late winter


It forms a compact plant with long arching branches. There are neat little bell-shaped leaves on its spiny branches. The spring flowers are yellow and oval red fruits appear later. This shrub often has brilliant red autumn colour, enhanced by the red richness of the fruit that hangs beneath the branches.

The plants come with their root systems intact, whereas bare root plants can lose the tiny fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that they will become more established quicker than bare root. They can also be planted into warm soils when roots are active, outside the dormant period. Whereas the bare root season ends between April to September, September, October, March April and May are ideal months for planting cell grown plants. In fact, unlike bare root, you can plant cell grown plants throughout the year as long as the roots are kept moist. That is why 60% of the world`s forestry trees are now cell grown!
