This RHS Premium Cell Grown Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea) is a wonderful purple shrubs for the garden, compact and upright with small neat leaves that are held on spiny stalks. Plentiful little bell-shaped yellow flowers are borne in spring. In autumn, red berries enhance the rich red autumnal tints. It looks good in a border and can be used to complement various plantings, serving grey, silver, orange and red themes particularly well.

•Cultivate: They are fully to frost hardy, and will require cool to cold winters, with full sun and deep, moist fertile soil. You can propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in the summer or seeds in the autumn.

•Extended planting season - they can be planted when you want to plant them, as long as the roots are kept moist. You are not restricted to the bare root season
