Hawthorn (Crataegus Monogyna) Pack of 120 Cell Grown 15-30cms

Product Code:  CRMO120

From Only: £89.99 Ex VAT
Or £0.75 Per Plant

This RHS Premium Cell Grown Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) hedge comes with the benefits of container grown plants but the price is nearer the bare root price. The plants come with their root systems intact whereas bare root plants can lose the tiny fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that they will become more established quicker than bare root. They can also be planted into warm soils when roots are active outside the dormant period. Whereas the bare root season ends between April to September, September - October through to March April and May are ideal months for planting cell grown plants. In fact unlike bare root you can plant cell grown plants throughout the year as long as the roots are kept moist. That is why 60% of the worlds forestry trees are now cell grown!

Complete Product Information for Hawthorn (Crataegus Monogyna) Pack of 120 Cell Grown 15-30cms
The Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is a fast growing thorny native deciduous hedge with dark glossy green leaves.

In spring clusters of prominent scented white flowers burst into leaf within a few days of the initial buds appearing followed by glossy red haws in autumn which sustain out native birds. The leaves are 3, 5 or 7 lobed bright green tinged with red. Prune out old growth after flowering to encourage new stems that will bloom the following year taking care not to remove flowering stems.

Hawthorn makes an excellent hedge with a long season of interest. Trim between July and March. For hedges 3-20ft (0.9-6m) plant, 9-12ins (23-30cm) apart or for a denser or stock-proof hedge plant in a staggered double row with 15ins (38cm) between rows and 19ins (45cm) between plants.

Bare root hedging is a very low cost way of planting a hedge but is only available to buy and plant when dormant (November-March). Orders ahead of 1st November will be stored to guarantee an early delivery date.

Hawthorn is suitable for all soil types and positions in particular grows well in town, coastal or exposed gardens. It has no serious insect or disease problems. Potential diseases include leaf spot or fireblight. Potential pests include aphids, caterpillars or gall mites. Only birds will eat the bitter cherries.

Toxicity; the fruit can cause mild stomach upset if ingested.
