The leaves that appear in spring are delicate leaflets usually with nine to eleven oval leaflets, arrange in pairs with an odd one at the end. It is particularly good in coastal positions, but also damp shade or full sun. Due to its fast growth it can be used to form an effective windbreak to protect other plants and therefore is wind tolerant. The Ash hedge thrives in all soil conditions, in particular deep lime- rich and moist soils. It needs a rich, fertile soil, acid or neutral or just mildly alkaline. It is advisable not to plant Ash in a hedge as it will give rise to gaps forming in the hedge, due to the large size of its foliage.

The Fraxinus Excelsior is a species of Fraxinus native to most of Europe, Fraxinus is the classical Latin name for an ash tree and excelsior means taller, indicating that this species is one of the tallest ashes. It is a very hardy and fast growing native deciduous plant with wide spreading surface roots, which appears its best in winter.
