Common name: Flowering currant
Our Royal Horticultural Society Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum `King Edward VII`) is a compact, upright, colourful deciduous hedge with lobed foliage. It can be superb as a single species flowering hedge, but also as a component in a mixed hedge. The dark-red flowers appear before the leaves in spring, they are masses of really colourful long pendent intense crimson flowers from late March to May, often smothering the plant. They are followed by fragrant mid to dark green lobed leaves and in summer blue-black berries.
