Elderberry (Sambucus Nigra) Pack of 15 Cell Grown 10-20cm

Product Code:  SANI15

From Only: £19.99 Ex VAT
Or £1.33 Per Plant

The RHS Elderberry (Sambucus Nigra) is a fast growing native deciduous shrub with graceful fern- like foliage, and upright stems with fine green leaves. It produces clusters of creamy white flower in June and July; followed by large bunches of shiny black elder-berries, high in Vitamin C. Both the flowers and berries are used in cordial and wine making. It comes into leaf early January and the leaves fall late in sheltered areas during November and have 5/7 leaflets with slightly serrated edges.

The Elderberry likes sunny areas to produce maximum fruit, but will tolerate some shade. It is suitable for all soil, but in particular prefers most and fertile soil. It is advisable to prune in March, to create a low framework of branches to carry on new growth.

The Sambucus Nigra has no serious insect or disease problems. Potential insects include black-fly and Glasshouse red spider mite. Toxicity; any part of the plant may cause discomfort if ingested. However, the berries may be consumed if cooked.

Cell Grown hedges come with the benefit of container grown plants but the price is nearer the bare root price. The plants come with their root systems intact, whereas bare root plants can lose the tiny fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that they will become more established quicker than bare root. They can also be planted into warm soils when roots are active, outside the dormant period. Whereas the bare root season ends between April to September, September, October, March April and May are ideal months for planting cell grown plants. Infact, unlike bare root, you can plant cell grown plants throughout the year as long as the roots are kept moist. That is why 60% of the worlds forestry trees are now cell grown!
