Our RHS Darwin`s Barberry (Berberis darwinii) cell grown plants are extracted from their cells prior to despatch and are wrapped in protective packaging to ensure the root plug stays moist. The plants come with their root systems intact, whereas bare root plants can lose the fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that cell grown plants can become more quickly established than bare root. Another advantage of cell grown Darwin`s Barberry is that it can be planted into warm soils when roots are active, outside the dormant period. As long as the roots are kept moist, cell grown plants can be planted throughout the year.

Benefits
• RHS cell grown Darwin's Barberry hedging plants, under licence granted by the Royal Horticultural Society
• Extended planting season - they can be planted when you want to plant them as long as the roots are kept moist. You are not restricted to the bare root season
• Minimal root disturbance - root systems are supplied intact - with no loss of fine feeding roots and root hairs so once planted they can grow rapidly not suffering the shock that bare root plants will.
• Uniformity - these plants are more uniform.

NB: Our cell grown plants are sold in quantities of 12. Unfortunately we are unable to deliver split bundles. We can offer a substantial volume discount. These plants are between 10-20cm high though the actual height may vary due to the growing season.

Complete Product Information for Darwin's Barberry (Berberis darwinii) Pack of 12 Cell Grown 10-20cm
Our RHS Darwin`s Barberry (Berberis darwinii) cell grown plants are extracted from their cells prior to despatch and are wrapped in protective packaging to ensure the root plug stays moist.

Berberis Darwinii was discovered by Charles Darwin, this is one of the best flowering evergreens. The dense thicket of stems growing from ground level make a substantial border shrub as well as an effective hedge, reinforced by its thorniness, which makes it useful for security. In addition, orange flowers are carried in spring, and small purple-black berries in autumn. It is equally impressive grown in full sun or partial shade, against a wall or in an exposed position. Clip fairly hard in spring to limit the size.

Cell Grown Berberis darwinii hedges come with the benefit of container grown plants but the price is nearer the bare root price. The plants come with their root systems intact, whereas bare root plants can lose the tiny fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that they will become more established quicker than bare root. They can also be planted into warm soils when roots are active, outside the dormant period. Whereas the bare root season ends between April to September, September, October, March April and May are ideal months for planting cell grown plants. Infact, unlike bare root, you can plant cell grown plants throughout the year as long as the roots are kept moist. That is why 60% of the worlds forestry trees are now cell grown!
