Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) Pack of 12 Cell Grown 20-40cm

Product Code:  MASY12

From Only: £18.39 Ex VAT
Or £1.53 Per plant

Our RHS Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) cell grown plants are extracted from their cells prior to despatch and are wrapped in protective packaging to ensure the root plug stays moist. The plants come with their root systems intact, whereas bare root plants can lose the fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that cell grown plants can become more quickly established than bare root. Another advantage of cell grown Crab Apple is that it can be planted into warm soils when roots are active, outside the dormant period. As long as the roots are kept moist, cell grown plants can be planted throughout the year.

Benefits
• RHS cell grown Crab Apple hedging plants, under licence granted by the Royal Horticultural Society
• Extended planting season - they can be planted when you want to plant them as long as the roots are kept moist. You are not restricted to the bare root season
• Minimal root disturbance - root systems are supplied intact - with no loss of fine feeding roots and root hairs so once planted they can grow rapidly not suffering the shock that bare root plants will.
• Uniformity - these plants are more uniform.

NB: Our cell grown plants are sold in quantities of 12. Unfortunately we are unable deliver split bundles. We can offer a substantial volume discount. These plants are between 20-40cm high though the actual height may vary due to the growing season.

Complete Product Information for Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) Pack of 12 Cell Grown 20-40cm
Our RHS Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) cell grown plants are extracted from their cells prior to despatch and are wrapped in protective packaging to ensure the root plug stays moist.

The Crab Apple is one of the ancestors of Malus Sylvestris, the domesticated eating apple that is a native, deciduous, small shrubby hedge. It is very hardy and does well in all positions, in particular sun or partial shade, dry and exposed areas.

In early May the Malus sylvestris has flowers that are cup-shaped, white with a pink flush emerging from red buds in spring, after they are much sought out by bees. They flower from March to May and leaves are alternate with pointed tips. In autumn, after the frost, yellow-green tinged with red, fleshy apple-like fruits develop that are very sour when raw. Crab Apples have a high pectin content, which makes them ideal for jam making. It is ideal to pick the fruits after frost.
