Hazel (Corylus avellana) is fast growing species of hazel native to Europe. Common Hazel is a shrub common in many European woodlands and is also an important component of the hedgerows that were the traditional field boundaries in lowland England. Hazel can also grow into a wonderful medium sized tree exhibiting large mid green leaves. Come spring the tree is covered in a mass of long yellow catkins followed by edible nuts in autumn which are rich in protein and unsaturated fat. Moreover, they contain significant amounts of thiamine and vitamin B6, as well as smaller amounts of other B vitamins beneficial to the body.
