• Extended planting season - they can be planted when you want to plant them as long as the roots are kept moist. You are not restricted to the bare root season
• Minimal root disturbance - root systems are supplied intact - with no loss of fine feeding roots and root hairs so once planted they can grow rapidly not suffering the shock that bare root plants will.
• Uniformity - these plants are more uniform.

NB: Our cell grown plants are sold in quantities of 12. Unfortunately we are unable deliver split bundles. We can offer a substantial volume discount. These plants are between 15-30cm high though the actual height may vary due to the growing season.

Complete Product Information for Common Holly (Ilex aquifolium) Pack of 12 Cell Grown 10-20cm
Our RHS Common Holly (Ilex aquifolium) cell grown plants are extracted from their cells prior to despatch and are wrapped in protective packaging to ensure the root plug stays moist.

Whereas bare root plants can lose the fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted these plants come with their root systems intact. This means that cell grown plants can become more quickly established than bare root. Another advantage of cell grown Common Holly is that it can be planted into warm soils when roots are active, outside the dormant period. As long as the roots are kept moist, cell grown plants can be planted throughout the year.

The Holly (llex aquifolium) is a slow growing evergreen hedge, so needs little maintenance. Its dense form and prickly leaves are good intruder deterrent. It is in leaf all year, in flower from May to June, and the seeds ripen from November to March. The scented flowers are dioecious, individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any plant, so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required. The red/orange berries on pollinated female plants provide food for native bird throughout the winter.

It is suitable for any soil and position; in particular light (Sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in heavy clay and nutritionally poor soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and will even grow in very acid soil. It can grow in full shade (deep woodland) semi-shade (light woodland) orful sun. It requires dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought. The plant can tolerate maritime exposure and atmospheric pollution. It grows by approx 10-15 cm p.a and should be trimmed in midsummer or autumn.

Holly is an excellent hedge plant that can be included in a native mixed hedge, tolerating hard clipping and maritime exposure and forming a dense stock-proof shelter. It can be trimmed into a superb formal decorative hedge, which provides an excellent windbreak; it is therefore good for security around boundaries.

To prevent the birds from eating all the berries, tie netting over selected stems or cut a few stems in early/mid December and stand them in a bucket of water in a cool area and they should stay fresh. However, make sure that there is plenty of alternative bird food available before reserving any Holly branches.

It requires a minimum July temperature of 12°c for good fruit production. They tolerate short periods in winter down to -15°c. Severe frosts can kill whole branches, especially if they are open to the sky. The young growth in spring can be damaged by late frosts.
