Common Name: Common Alder
Our Royal Horticultural Society Alder (Alnus glutinosa) is a fast growing, deciduous native plant with shiny leaves, producing a purple haze with yellow catkins in March and releasing attractive false cones in autumn that can last longer. The leaves are a rounded-fan shape, when they first emerge they are a soft-orange brown colour and later mature to dark green.
Trimming the hedge during July/August helps retain its leaves throughout winter. It is particularly good in costal positions, but also sun or semi shade and due to its fast growth when young, it can be used to form an effective windbreak to protect other plants. It grows in all conditions of soil, but best in moist or even wet soil and will tolerate prolonged periods of standing in water.
RHS bare root hedging is a very low cost way of planting a hedge, but is only available to buy and plant when dormant (November-March). Orders ahead of 1st November will be stored to guarantee an early delivery date.
