The Catalpa is a mop headed, medium sized, deciduous tree that is at its best when planted as a specimen in a lawn. A short thick brown to grey trunk support long or straggling branches which form a broad or irregular head. The tree produces big heart shaped bronze leaves that turn bright yellow as they mature whilst insignificant white flowers are present throughout the summer. These flowers are then followed by `bean` pods hence its common name; The Indian Bean Tree. This tree will tolerate most soils types as long as they are not too dry or too wet, it is best suited to clay soils but should grow well when planted deep in any fertile soil.
