This RHS Premium Cell Grown Bird Cherry (Prunus Padus) hedge comes with the benefits of container grown plants but the price is nearer the bare root price. The plants come with their root systems intact-- whereas bare root plants can lose the tiny fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that they will become more established quicker than bare root. They can also be planted into warm soils when roots are active-- outside the dormant period. Whereas the bare root season ends between April to September-- September-- October-- March April and May are ideal months for planting cell grown plants. In fact-- unlike bare root-- you can plant cell grown plants throughout the year as long as the roots are kept moist. That is why 60 of the worlds forestry trees are now cell grown

Complete Product Information for Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) Pack of 120 Cell Grown 20/50cms
This temperate Eurasian tree grows to around 15m tall, usually considerably less in gardens. Has 10cm long, serrated-edged leaves with fine hairs, often developing orange tints in autumn. The flowers are white, 1.2cm wide, on racemes just over 10cm long. They are followed by pea-sized black fruit that birds find attractive. ‘Watereri’ is a shapely tree with pendulous racemes up to 20cm long.

With pea-sized black cherries which ripen in mid-summer. As with most cherries-- the foliage turns yellow in autumn.

Prunus Padus is adaptable to a wide range of soils-- in particular well drained soils in full sun to part shade.

This plant needs little regular pruning in summer to reduce the risk of bacterial canker-- however to renoate old plants-- remove the oldest stems at the base and cut back all branches to healthy young shoots in the late winter.

The Prunus Padus has no serious insect or disease problems. Potential diseases include leaf spot-- canker and black knot. Potential insects include aphids-- scale-- borers and to a lesser degree. Only birds will eat the bitter cherries.
