One of the most attractive birch trees, the Betula albosinensis var. septentrionalis or 'Northern Chinese Red Birch' makes an excellent medium sized specimen tree. It has highly attractive peeling bark, with shades of coppery pink, orange and red, which is particularly eye catching in winter when the tree is leafless. It produces yellow-brown catkins in spring, and has green foliage which turns yellow in the autumn and creates dappled shade. This tree does best when planted in full sun/partial shade, and is tolerant of most soils.
