Barberry (Berberis Julianae) Pack of 15 Cell Grown 20-50cms

Product Code:  BEJU15
Available from September 2012

From Only: £19.99 Ex VAT

This RHS Premium Cell Grown Barberry (Berberis Julianae) hedge comes with the benefits of container grown plants but the price is nearer the bare root price. The plants come with their root systems intact, whereas bare root plants can lose the tiny fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that they will become more established quicker than bare root. They can also be planted into warm soils when roots are active, outside the dormant period. Whereas the bare root season ends between April to September, September, October, March April and May are ideal months for planting cell grown plants. In fact, unlike bare root, you can plant cell grown plants throughout the year as long as the roots are kept moist. That is why 60% of the world’s forestry trees are now cell grown!

Benefits
• RHS cell grown barberry hedging plants, under licence granted by the Royal Horticultural Society
• Overall, the benefits of potted plants with the price of bare root plants
• Extended planting season - they can be planted when you want to plant them, as long as the roots are kept moist. You are not restricted to the bare root season
• Minimal root disturbance - root systems are supplied intact, with no loss of fine feeding roots and root hairs, so once planted they can grow rapidly, not suffering the 'shock' that bare root plants will.
• Uniformity - these plants are more uniform.
.

NB: Cell Grown Plants are sold in bundles containing 15 plants. Unfortunately, we are unable deliver split bundles. We can offer a substantial volume discount. These plants are between 20-50cms high though the actual height may vary due to the growing season.

Complete Product Information for Barberry (Berberis Julianae) Pack of 15 Cell Grown 20-50cms
The RHS Barberry (Berberis Julianae) is a dense, upright, fast growing evergreen shrub which creates an excellent, impenetrable hedge. With long thorny, glossy heavily spined alternatively arranged leaves, dark green above, pale green beneath. Alongside clusters of small yellow flowers, which are sometimes red tinged at the edges in spring and followed by edible, bloomy, blue-black egg-shaped fruits in autumn.

The Berberis Julianae is suitable for all positions and soils, in particular shade with moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils. It is tolerant of pruning, but looks best with natural growth.

The Berberis Julianae has been awarded the RHS AGM (award of Garden Merit). For hedging, trim after flowering. For hedges 4-7ft (1.2-2.1m), plant 1.5-2ft (45-60cm) apart. The stems can be thinned out in late winter so the plant maintains a tidy form - remove one in five stems to the base. You can also cut off any dead or diseased branches in mid-summer. The leaves have spiny margins, so this shrub is ideal for planting on boundaries to deter potential.
