Ash (Fraxinus Excelsior) Pack of 4 Cell Grown 20-50cms

Product Code:  FREX4

From Only: £11.15 Ex VAT
Or £2.79 Per Plant

This RHS Premium Cell Grown Ash (Fraxinus Excelsior) hedge comes with the benefits of container grown plants but the price is nearer the bare root price. The plants come with their root systems intact, whereas bare root plants can lose the tiny fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that they will become more established quicker than bare root. They can also be planted into warm soils when roots are active, outside the dormant period. Whereas the bare root season ends between April to September, September, October, March April and May are ideal months for planting cell grown plants. In fact, unlike bare root, you can plant cell grown plants throughout the year as long as the roots are kept moist. That is why 60% of the world’s forestry trees are now cell grown!

Complete Product Information for Ash (Fraxinus Excelsior) Pack of 4 Cell Grown 20-50cms
The Ash hedge (Fraxinus Excelsior) is a species of Fraxinus native to most of Europe, Fraxinus is the classical Latin name for an ash tree and excelsior means taller, indicating that this species is one of the tallest ashes. It is a very hardy and fast growing native deciduous plant with wide spreading surface roots, which appears its best in winter.

The Ash hedge has dark green leaves and large pendent fruit clusters in autumn. The leaves that appear in spring are delicate leaflets usually with nine to eleven oval leaflets, arrange in pairs with an odd one at the end. From the black woolly buds, male or female flowers develop. This sometimes occurs on the same plant, however some plants which are male one year are female the next year. The female plants develop into fruits often called “ash keys” that are stiff sprays of bunches of keys.

It is particularly good in coastal positions, but also damp shade or full sun. Due to its fast growth it can be used to form an effective windbreak to protect other plants and therefore is wind tolerant. The Ash hedge thrives in all soil conditions, in particular deep lime- rich and moist soils. It needs a rich, fertile soil, acid or neutral or just mildly alkaline. It is advisable not to plant Ash in a hedge as it will give rise to gaps forming in the hedge, due to the large size of its foliage.

The Ash hedge has a high conservation value; it supports 41 species of insects and several birds. The fruit clusters provide good bird food in spring. Tree guards can be used as Ash as it is prone to stock and rabbit damage. It is pollution tolerant, and therefore is a good urban dweller.
