Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus)
The Hornbeam (
Carpinus betulus) is a hardy native hedge which is similar in appearance to the
Green Beech. It produces green catkins from late spring to autumn which turn to clusters of winged fruit and act as a food source for bird and wildlife. The bright green leaves darken during the summer with dead leaves hanging on into January if the hedge is kept well trimmed. Much like the Beech hedge, the Hornbeam hedge prefers damp and well drained soil and is perfect for tall garden screening.
