The Alder hedge (Alnus glutinosa) inherits the Glutinosa in its Latin names from the stickiness of its buds and young leaves. It is a fast growing, deciduous native plant with shiny leaves, producing a purple haze with yellow catkins in March and releasing attractive false cones in autumn that can last longer. The leaves are a rounded-fan shape, when they first emerge they are a soft-orange brown colour and later mature to dark green.
