The Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) is Greek for Wild Cherry (Padus).It is an attractive fast growing native deciduous cherry. It carries racemes (strands) small, almond scented white flowers in early summer (May/June) appear after the foliage emerges in spring. Flowers are followed by astringent, edible pea-sized black cherries which ripen in mid-summer. As with most cherries, the foliage turns yellow in autumn.
